Similar to Ghassan Kanafani’s “Letters to Ghada al-Samman,” the novelist revealed a love affair she shared with the poet Ansi al-Hajj, who passed away in February 2014. Al-Hajj was 26 years old at the time, while Ghada was not yet 20 and preparing to enter the American University of Beirut to study literature, according to the novel. The book surprised the cultural scene, especially since Ansi al-Hajj had never mentioned any relationship with her, not even to his close friends, as reported by the Arab Media Network. Ghada stated in her book that she did not reply to any of Ansi al-Hajj’s letters, saying, “I didn’t write to Ansi. We used to meet almost every day at the Horseshoe Café in Hamra, or the Dolce Vita and Diplomat Cafés in Raouche, or Uncle Sam’s Café… These cafés have disappeared today.” Social media users ridiculed the new book and rejected any comparison between it and her love story with the Palestinian novelist Ghassan Kanafani.
