is a story by Daniel Defoe, first published in 1719. It is sometimes considered the first novel in English. This fictional autobiography tells the story of a young man who is isolated on an island, alone for a long time without meeting any human beings. After several years, he meets a savage who teaches him some of the intellectual progress of civilized man and makes him his servant. At the end of the story, Robinson Crusoe and his servant return to Europe, to the civilized world. For many, this story represents the dream of isolation from this unjust world and a life within the compassionate environment of nature.
