Description

India was a cradle of ideas and philosophies, considered a prominent center of spiritual life in the ancient world. This was due to its unprecedented exploration of the depths of the human soul, transforming it into a great crucible where various divine and metaphysical ideas fermented, giving rise to a collection of religions. These religions were characterized by their richness in transparency, tolerance, and peace, and by the great diversity of their heritage, ranging from a vast multitude of deities and exaggerated veneration and worship to atheism and the denial of all gods, passing through monotheism and the Trinity. We now have before us the Hindu religious experience, through its sacred text, the Vedas, which Hindus consider the source of their religious beliefs. It is not only the oldest form of Sanskrit literature, but also the oldest complete religious text in the world. Through the Vedas, we will learn about Indian cultures and ideas, the development of their literature, their religious beliefs, their conception of God, the theory of God’s indwelling in all creation (or pantheism), the philosophy of enlightenment (Nirvana) and rebirth, the system of transmigration of the soul through reincarnation, and the practice of yoga, which aims to facilitate the soul’s liberation from the body. We will also observe how unjust the caste system is within Hindu society, a society unique in the world.
