Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle (22 May 1859 – 7 July 1930) was a Scottish physician and writer best known for his Sherlock Holmes detective stories, which are a landmark in detective fiction, as well as for his creation of the character Professor Challenger and for popularizing the Mary Celeste mystery. His writings were prolific, including fantasy and science fiction stories, plays, and romantic, realistic and historical novels.
