In the beginning was Mesopotamia, and in the beginning was the great land of Iraq. The land of civilizations that rose with the Sumerians and the alphabet. Civilizations succeeded one another, leaving their valuable traces on the earth. The land of the two rivers, Mesopotamia, is a testament to the story of a people who worked hard and exerted themselves. The world derived all its knowledge from the civilizations that arose on the banks of these two immortal rivers, the Tigris and Euphrates.
In the modern era, Iraq has witnessed tremendous development—economically, humanly, culturally, health-wise, and militarily—after the nationalization of its oil, which had been in the hands of foreigners. It eradicated illiteracy, and the world acclaimed its achievements in the fields of health, science, and technology. It built an army that is considered the fourth largest in the world in terms of equipment and competence. It defeated its fiercest enemies in an unparalleled war, and its Kurdish people enjoyed the best rights compared to their counterparts in neighboring countries. This era witnessed tremendous industrial development and a scientific revolution, even though it was one of the most difficult periods in Iraq’s modern history, spanning the years from 1968 to 2003. A long war spanning eight years, a world war in 1991, a blockade lasting more than thirteen years, and then an American-British-Zionist-Iranian war and invasion… bloody events… President Saddam Hussein recounts in this book and in subsequent documents.
In 2005, I proposed to the imprisoned President Saddam Hussein in American custody the idea of writing his memoirs for publication. The President approved the idea and encouraged me to implement it. However, the American prison guards prohibited us from exchanging any papers until the spring of 2006. The President did not trust that the Americans would allow him to write his memoirs for publication. However, he was enthusiastic about the idea and told me, “It is essential that I write my memoirs, for life is in God’s hands. I will tell you everything my memory allows, so that you can record it.” Before that, during one of the interrogation sessions, the President handed me some papers from his handwritten memoirs. However, the Director of the American Liaison Office (Director of the US Liaison Office) asked the President to hand these papers over to the judge who received them and promised to hand them over if he read them and verified their contents. However, he did not keep his promise.
