Description

The novel The Road to Hell tells the story of Libyan prisoner Ali al-Akrami, and through his voice, we hear the stories of many other prisoners whose voices were never heard, buried deep in the darkness of the prison. It also tells the story of Muammar Gaddafi, the man who ruled Libya with an iron fist for forty-two years of tyranny and relentless oppression, which ended with him hiding in a sewage pipe.

The novel also describes the tortures suffered by the prisoners: how they were deprived of food, how their most basic rights were violated, and how many died under torture. Some were hung upside down by their feet for days for misbehaving until blood flowed from their eyes. Others were imprisoned in solitary confinement until they lost their minds, conversing with insects. Some prisoners were even subjected to rape.

But hope remained despite everything, and they endured with beautiful patience. Some died and joined their Lord, while others were given a chance to survive and win a new life, which they began despite their pain and defeats, despite the indelible scars of imprisonment.
