This is for the day of revelation, when I was not present to hold you close to my heart as you trembled. This is for the day of Taif, when I was not present to repel the stones from you with my chest. This is for the day of Khadija’s death, when I was not present to wipe away your tears and say to you, “I would sacrifice my sandal for your sake.” This is for the day of Uhud, when I was not present to wipe the blood from your noble face to protect you from that blow. This is for the shoulder of the poisoned sheep, when I was not present to eat it on your behalf! This is because I believed in you even though I did not see you, because I believed in you even though I did not hear from you, and because I loved you even though I did not see you. May my father and mother be sacrificed for you, O Messenger of God.
