Description
The Yacoubian Building is a novel by Egyptian author Alaa Al Aswany. The title of the novel is inspired by the real name of a building located on Talaat Harb Street, built in 1934 by the dean of the Armenian community, millionaire Hagop Yacoubian. Some consider the Yacoubian Building, located in downtown Cairo, a testament to Egypt’s modern history over the past hundred years, with all its crises, successes, and disasters.
The novel was a huge success and was translated into several languages. However, it was met with considerable controversy in Egypt and the Arab world. The novel was adapted into a film in 2006, with a screenplay by Wahid Hamed and directed by Marwan Hamed. It was also adapted into a television series in 2007, with a screenplay by Atef Beshay and directed by Ahmed Saqr. In the novel, Al Aswany highlights the successive changes that occurred in Egyptian society’s thinking and behavior during the post-opening period, through realistic models living among members of society.
