Description

“The people we deem ignorant know many things, but they know them with their hearts, not their minds. Supreme wisdom flows in their blood, yet they are unaware; strength resides within them, yet they are unaware. This is an ancient people; take a peasant from among them and open his heart, and you will find within it the sediment of ten thousand years, of experiences and knowledge accumulated one upon another without his knowledge.”

A rural family from the Beheira Governorate moved to Cairo and settled in the Al-Maida neighborhood. The family consisted of Mohsen, a high school student; his three uncles; and his aunt, Zanouba, a woman in her forties who spent her money and time visiting sorcerers in the hope of finding a husband. The men of the household fell in love with their neighbor, Saniya, a beautiful pianist, but she was indifferent to all of them. Instead, she was attached to their neighbor, Mustafa, whom Zanouba plotted to win as her husband. The novel’s central theme lies in its emphasis on the patriotism and unity of Egyptians, despite their differing viewpoints, their disagreements over the same goal, and even occasional conflicts. Yet, when any one of them is threatened, they all rise up to protect and defend it.
