One of my greatest aspirations a few years ago was to travel to Europe on a scholarly journey, spending a considerable amount of time there to study the West’s origins and explore the institutions from which inventors, explorers, devout philosophers, hardworking scientists, accomplished politicians, conquering leaders, merchants, industrialists, farmers, and financiers emerged. They are, in fact, the subjects of that city. This dream came true, and I wanted to record these chapters and articles, indeed the sighs and groans I wrote describing the landmarks of the West, what I encountered there, and what I learned about it. I am certain that they contain only as much of that enchanting city as a traveler can reach and a stranger can grasp. I hope, through God’s generosity, that they will benefit readers of Arabic, and that, through them, I will continue to provide support and facilitation.
