Description

“Confucius said: If the rulers of the state respect the rules of etiquette and conduct, the people will not show disrespect to one another. If the rulers are just and honest, the people will follow their example. If they are trustworthy, the affections of the people will be drawn to them. If this is their way of governing, people will flock to their kingdom carrying their children on their backs.”

Chinese philosophy played the role that religion played in European and Middle Eastern cultures; it represented the sacred text of the Chinese people, from which they drew their teachings and instilled them in their children from a very young age. This philosophy was formed from three main schools of thought: the philosophy of Lao Tzu, the philosophy of Confucius, and the philosophy of Mencius. In the first part of this book, the renowned thinker Firas al-Sawah presents a study of Chinese philosophy in general, its nature, history, and schools. He also discusses Lao Tzu as the first teacher of Chinese philosophy, examining his life and ideas; Confucius, exploring his life, thought, philosophy, and place in Chinese culture; and his disciple Mencius, considered the second teacher of Confucianism. The book also introduces the philosophy of Mozi, a critique of Confucianism. The second part includes translations of Confucius’s “Dialogue” and Mencius’s “The Book of the Aphorisms,” which contain the fundamental teachings of Chinese philosophy.
