Description

In most of his novels, Tahar Ben Jelloun addresses the theme of immigration and the difficulty of integration, and the enduring dream of return for those who have emigrated from their countries, especially Morocco, after they have resolved the challenges of life there.

Religion, social norms, language, lifestyle, childhood memories, belonging… all of this adds to the questions that deepen the confusion, and on top of that come the children… children born in France, with no memories of their homeland, unable to bear the lifestyle and social norms their parents try to impose on them! Mohammed loses his peace… It’s the children… the life they are living.

“I’ll go see a psychiatrist and tell him: I’m sick because I love my children. What medicine do you advise me to take? Should I drink a syrup for familial love, or take pills to make me forget that I have five children, including a daughter who left with a stranger to our culture, our religion, our country? I did everything to raise them…”

After retiring, Mohammed returned to his hometown… but even there, he could no longer find peace…
