Description

In his novel Cain, the Portuguese author José Saramago revisits the story of creation, taking it far from its biblical context and reshaping it according to his own vision for the reader. It’s as if he’s proposing an alternative, fictional timeline that challenges established religious tenets.

This is evident in the novelist’s description of the Christian Bible as “a guide to bad habits,” and his assertion that Pope Benedict XVI “speaks in the name of God to promote medieval attitudes.”

Cain, translated by Ali Abdul Amir Saleh, was published by Al-Jamal Publications as part of a collection of distinguished translated novels featuring Saramago’s other works.
