It is not enough for clothing to be beautiful, attractive, and elegant; it must also provide protection, shielding the body from the elements and fluctuations of the weather, and be suitable for the region and the changing seasons. Similarly, education fulfills two fundamental functions: adornment and intellectual development. Who can deny the importance of clothing as an adornment? Who can deny the value of embellishment in clothing? Who does not seek beauty and refinement in dress? What good is a garment that adorns its wearer but leaves them naked?
Education bestows upon its recipient the garments of refinement, gentleness, civility, and eloquence in expression, in walking, standing, sitting, and interacting with others. It also polishes and refines its recipient, just as a craftsman’s hand polishes and beautifies pearls.
The function of education here is adornment and embellishment, as essential to humankind as adornment is to clothing. However, its other function is practical: preparing its recipient to enter the arena of life victoriously, working and earning, striving and prospering, earning his bread by the sweat of his brow, living comfortably, enjoying peace of mind, and functioning as an active member of human society.
Who would limit education to mere ornamentation? Who would confine their upbringing to mere work?
