The Bastard of Istanbul is the second novel published in English by Turkish author Elif Shafak. It was published in 2006 and became a bestseller in Turkey. In this novel, Shafak addresses, among other issues, the Armenian Genocide, which led to her prosecution in Turkey under Article 301 of the Turkish Penal Code. However, the charges were later dropped.
