Description
This book aims to introduce the most important literary texts of the cultures of the ancient Near East, including myths, epics, wisdom sayings, proverbs, hymns, prayers, and more. The author has supplemented these texts with a number of studies that shed light on this literature and aid in its understanding and appreciation. Some of these texts are presented in their entirety, while others are presented through excerpts that convey their spirit and the intentions of their authors, especially when the clay tablets are not entirely legible due to breaks and damage. Although the author has included explanations and analyses alongside his texts, he has kept them to the bare minimum necessary to avoid overwhelming the inexperienced reader. At the same time, he hopes to provide researchers in other humanities fields with useful examples that will obviate the need to consult the major international reference works upon which this book is based.
