Description

Prison is a stagnant place, but Nawal El Saadawi was not like that inside. Within its walls, she came to know the true nature of all things, discovering the most beautiful colors and the most beautiful people, and also the ugliest. Yet, she saw one thing that swept away all other colors: the hope of breaking down doors, bars, and locks, and soaring into the air like a singing bird. Hope is revolution; it is the song of a free bird. But she still did not possess her freedom in this prison. Yet, she wrote—her diary about this prison, about the conflicts that raged within her, both outside and inside its walls, and within herself as well. These turbulent conflicts led her to say things that she might have considered meaningless words. But despite that, she dreamed of revolution through these words, which sprang from within her like bullets from a gun, and which she released onto these pages.
