Description

This comprehensive dictionary of philosophers, logicians, theologians, and mystics from all eras and countries deviates from the norm of many dictionaries by including not only deceased but also living figures, providing ample space for the presentation of their views and doctrines, even though the intellectual development of most of them is incomplete.

Furthermore, the entries in this dictionary are arranged alphabetically according to the Arabic alphabet, disregarding the definite article “al-“. Under each name, we have placed its French equivalent first, then its English equivalent, and finally, in some necessary cases, its Latin equivalent. For Arab and Muslim philosophers, we have adopted Henry Corbin’s method of transliterating their names into Latin. Similarly, for philosophers’ names in English, we have adhered to the Encyclopedia Britannica’s format for proper nouns. Finally, for modern philosophers, we have retained their names as they are written and pronounced in their original languages.
