In a future world, dark times preceded the Second American Civil War. Standards of right and wrong were turned upside down. The nation was divided into two camps: one anti-abortion, the other pro-abortion. The two camps became two armies bent on destroying each other. To end the war, a horrific solution was introduced: the “Convention of Life.” The Convention of Life stipulated that human life was forbidden from the moment of conception until the age of thirteen. However, between the ages of thirteen and eighteen, parents had the right to have their children subjected to “dismantling,” in which their organs were harvested and transplanted into various recipients. Thus, the children were “aborted” retroactively, but their lives did not “theoretically” end.
Conner is a boy whose parents took drastic action to correct his disturbing behavior. Risa was raised in an asylum where the caretakers believed she had failed to prove herself worthy of life. Lev was dedicated by his religious family to be dismantled when he turned thirteen. Their paths cross, and together, the three teenagers struggle to stand firm on their principles and survive in a horrific world.
