The reason, then, is the fall. And the fall, in the concept of the formative mind, is primarily a sensory experience. The fall (Hawa-Ewa), as a sensory experience, must leave a trace in the existential abyss. The trace left by any birth—or rather, fall into the underworld—is the footprint on the earth. It is an experience that symbolizes humanity’s primitive striving on the face of the earth, which the religious mind, fond of using symbols, expressed as the “shoe print.” This print would not have been so revered in the mind of early humans were it not for its rich metaphysical connotations.
Perhaps the most significant of these connotations is what can be deduced from the fact that humanity’s fall occurred only through Eve’s actions (Hawa = Hawa), that is, through Eve’s sin. The fall from the mother’s womb, in this sense, is synonymous with the fall from Paradise. That is, the fetus’s fall to earth is the symbolic counterpart to Adam’s moral fall, expressed in the Abrahamic religions as expulsion from Paradise.
