Description

Bound by fear and helplessness, Amal Bounemer lives a conservative rural life in her Druze village in Mount Lebanon, where many of life’s questions are met with escapism and isolation. Her father, a blacksmith from the sheikh class, wields his authority over the family, shaping the future of his four daughters to fit his limited world. The religious commitment of Amal’s parents prevents her from attending the American University of Beirut. In this atmosphere, Amal makes a crucial deal for liberation by marrying Salem, one of the wealthiest men in the Druze community. Will Salem keep his promise? Or will Amal wage a new battle to achieve her dream? This novel is an attempt to delve into contemporary Druze society and deconstruct it socially, religiously, and mythologically. It is a novel about freedom in its broadest sense, about motherhood as both a burden and an opportunity, and about love that transcends geographical, religious, and cultural boundaries.
