He who chooses to live free in the desert must fend for himself. This is a lesson he learned in his father’s life, a lesson for which he paid with his life. And he, too, will pay with his life. Is this freedom? Is shunning people a crime punishable by death? Is isolation a form of disbelief? Why torment himself? His fate is sealed, and no miracle will save him, for it failed his father. There are no miracles in the desert. If you fall into a trap, you must escape on your own. If you cannot, then accept your fate with courage. He will never suffer. There is no pain there. The pain is here, in the rock, in clinging to the protrusion, in life itself. The protrusion is life. How cruel life is!
