Description

This study not only presents the most important facts and information about the emigration of Soviet Jews, but also, and primarily, aims to offer a methodology for observation, analysis, and interpretation that views this phenomenon as part of a recurring pattern. The first chapters of the book address the demographic development patterns of Jewish communities and their migrations throughout history, as well as their history in the Soviet Union from their initial settlement there to the present day. The final chapters address the preparation of Soviet emigrants and their motivations for leaving, the issue of clandestine Jews, semi-Jews, and non-Jews who would arrive with the emigrants, the push and pull factors in both the Soviet Union and Israel, the various integration challenges, and the expected and unexpected consequences of the emigration, including the hostility of veteran Zionist settlers, particularly religious and Mizrahi Jews, towards the new arrivals. The final chapter presents a comprehensive vision for how to address this emigration.
