Description
In his book *My Escape to Freedom*, the author recounts his experiences during his imprisonment at Foča Prison (1983–1988) and the treatment he endured under the regime of Josip Broz Tito. During these long years of confinement, he turned inward to his thoughts and reflections, recording them under arduous conditions. He later compiled these writings into this book, in which he expresses his aspirations and hopes—without delving into the minutiae of current events—and articulates the yearnings of the Bosniak Muslim people and other peoples of Bosnia. Alija Izetbegović distills the very essence of subjects both conceivable and seemingly unthinkable. The book encompasses a vast array of ideas, reflections, and beliefs on diverse topics: the nature of literature as freedom; life, people, and liberty; religion and ethics; and political observations. He also discusses the “Third Way” theory—expanding upon concepts from his earlier work, *Islam Between East and West*—reflects on unforgettable truths regarding Communism and Nazism, and offers significant insights into Islamic movements and the Muslim community. Finally, he includes letters received from his children during his imprisonment; these serve as a testament to his emotional escape, his family life, and the boundless freedom he experienced even while behind bars.
