Ibn Jarir al-Tabari’s Tafsir is a reference in the science of tafsir. It relies heavily on interpretations transmitted from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) or from the Companions, most notably Ibn Abbas and the Successors. He cites their opinions with a full chain of transmission back to them, in addition to the opinions of experts in Arabic and rhetoric. He also mentions the various readings and their interpretations, the reasons for revelation, abrogating verses, and the linguistic meanings of the individual words, as well as numerous examples of Arabic poetry.
