The novel is written from the perspective of the Spanish woman who ruled Chile with her lover, the conquering knight Pedro de Valdivia, who invaded Chile and committed atrocities against its people that would make children’s hair turn gray. She is a Chilean woman, descended from a lineage that undoubtedly suffered at the hands of Pedro de Valdivia, and she harbors hatred for his demonic lover.
