Description

This book by Dr. Mohammed Abed Al-Jabri, who oversaw the project to publish Ibn Rushd’s works, aims to introduce Averroism, both in thought and practice, to serve as an incentive for young intellectuals. The rationalization of political Islam cannot be achieved without disseminating the Averroist spirit within cultural and educational circles. This is essential for understanding the heritage, embracing contemporary thought, and cultivating a critical spirit, scientific virtue, and moral integrity. The book is divided into thirteen chapters that address important milestones in the life of Ibn Rushd—the scholar, judge, and philosopher—covering his scientific and philosophical journey, his work in jurisprudence, independent legal reasoning (ijtihad), issuing legal opinions (fatwas), and correcting doctrine, as well as his astronomical and medical interests. It also includes an analysis of his stances on politics, despotic rule, tyranny, and the necessity of reform, along with an analysis of several of his theological and philosophical texts. The goal is to reintegrate Ibn Rushd—the jurist, philosopher, and scholar—into the core of Arab-Islamic thought, moving beyond the echoes of “Latin Averroism” in its Orientalist form, now that his original works have been made available, edited, and revised. His original language portrays him as the quintessential Arab and Islamic intellectual.
