Description

The Arab reader will undoubtedly be surprised to learn that the first call for educational reform and improvement originated in France. Indeed! French education in schools and universities at the end of the 19th century had reached an unacceptably low point (as Gustave Le Bon, the book’s author, observed). Major committees were formed to address this issue, and rightly so! The path to any genuine renaissance depends on the soundness and quality of education, something impossible as long as the educational approach is limited to measuring the student’s ability to memorize and recite information that is quickly forgotten after the exam. The ultimate goal of education, however, is to cultivate generations with strong character, capable of solving their society’s problems and confronting the challenges of the modern age. Taha Hussein rendered a remarkable service to Arab culture by translating Le Bon’s famous book, “The Spirit of Education.” Indeed, both the author and translator are outstanding.
