Description

“For the Sake of the Crown” is a dramatic poetic tragedy written by the author in 1895. It is a moral tale whose protagonist is a young man named Constantine, torn between two powerful emotions: love for his family and love for his country. He sacrifices the former for the latter, and then gives his life for the honor of his family, represented by his treacherous father, Brankomir. In the final parts, the conflict revolves around his father’s wife, Princess Basilida, and Constantine. The poet’s genius and great talent are evident in this tragedy. The style is simple and enjoyable, the ideas flow smoothly and coherently, the events are clear and distinct, and the characters’ morals are explained by their words and actions, leaving no ambiguity or obscurity.

Mr. Mustafa Lutfi al-Manfaluti adapted this tragedy into Arabic, transforming its theme into a beautiful narrative. He presented it as a story whose style captivates hearts and whose events hold sway over minds. Although the novel is a concise summary, the author successfully captured the original spirit. The author’s portrayal is powerful.
