Description

These diaries of the nationalist leader Fakhri al-Baroudi hold exceptional value; in many respects, they articulate the dreams, aspirations, and ideas of a Syrian figure of the *Nahda* (Arab Renaissance) era—a man who embraced liberal, forward-looking ideals from an early stage. This early journey to Europe served as an opportunity for the young al-Baroudi to test his civic concepts and find a model for his own reformist aspirations. Every line of these diaries carries a sense of hope, inspiration, and ambition—along with witty observations that reveal a spirit yearning for the innovations found in the lives of advanced nations. He sought to bring these ideas back as a guiding light for a new Arab era—a vision he championed upon his return, as he plunged into a multifaceted struggle spanning the cultural, intellectual, artistic, and political spheres. Hailing from a prominent, long-established Damascene family, the sharp-minded young al-Baroudi transformed his home in the Al-Qanawat neighborhood into a hub for writers, thinkers, artists, and political leaders—a center of daily, future-oriented activity for over half a century. He turned his residence into a bastion of resistance against both French colonialism and reactionary forces, eventually becoming the most renowned Damascene leader throughout the first half of the twentieth century, and well into the second.
