Description

The Center for Arab Unity Studies has published “The Question of Identity: Arabism, Islam, and the West” by Dr. Mohammed Abed al-Jabri. This is the third book in a new series entitled “Issues of Arab Thought,” which branches out from the “National Culture Series.”

In this book, al-Jabri addresses one of the fundamental issues currently preoccupying Arab public opinion, particularly intellectuals: the issue presented as a dichotomy between Arabism and Islam.

Al-Jabri also delves into the question of the Arab future and its relationship with the West, and the extent of its influence on the Arab world. He examines the elements of the current international situation and the Arabs’ place within it: the new international order, negotiations with Israel, and the abandonment of the “old” world order.

Finally, the author presents the image of Arabs and Islam in Western media, an image that is not objective, but rather controlled by two subjective factors: the desire for Arab oil and the fear of Arab and Muslim immigrants whom Europe cannot absorb nor do without.

The book is divided into three sections: (1) Arabism, Islam, and National Unity; (2) Us, the Other, and the Future, and (3) The Image of Arabs and Islam in Western Media.
